Modular modernization of obsolete analog calender controls

The product life cycle of control components is getting shorter and shorter, making it increasingly more difficult to get spare parts. These systems also included the analog control modules that were used in many Kleinewefers or Voith calenders for control tasks. Depending on machine type a maximum of three different modules was used:
• Position control bottom roll
• Pressure control top roll
• Sensomat controller

The upgrade is done in a modular fashion: The existing control racks are simply replaced with modern racks and the new modules with peripheral S7 control components are wired to the existing terminal strips. Various options such as panel, modernization of valve technology, safety upgrades, etc., complete the module package and allow a step-by-step modernization tailored to the customer’s needs.

A further benefit: Replacing the individual modules, including commissioning, is fast and easy. For subsequent full conversions of the remaining S5 controls to S7 the new modules can be integrated via Profibus. As the converted functions have already been commissioned the overall commissioning time is therefore substantially shorter.
