A calender will be available at the PTC in Heidenheim that can, in addition to pre-calendering, also perform the functions of “splicing”, “trimming” and “re-reeling”.
The paper, produced on XPM 6, will now be edge-trimmed in situ before it is further processed. In addition, several rolls can be spliced together to allow longer coating trials.
A major function, however, is the pre-calendering of the paper,to prepare it optimally for the following coating process. Depending on the requirements, this can take place before or after surface sizing or pre-coating. The proximity to the pilot coating machine allows greater flexibility here.
Papers that require only little calendering, e.g. newsprint or copy paper, can be calendered to their final smoothness with this calender. The unit serves also as a re-reeler on which any defect in the paper rolls can be cut out in order to make coating and calendering trials more efficient. |
